This is one of the first 3D models we have completed. It is the skull of a Triassic reptile called a Rhynchosaur. These little creatures, which are older than the dinosaurs, would have been scuttling about the landscape at a time when Shropshire was situated just north of the equator and the conditions were more like the Sahara! We also have some footprints thought to be made by Rhynchosaurs as well as bigger creatures and we’ll be working on these later in the project.

The model allows us to share this specimen with anyone around the world without the actual fossil having to leave the safety of the museum. The models actually provide really useful detail, but can be a little big for a blog post. The image here is a simple animation made from the true model.
