Behind the scenes

Original Ludlow specimen found for possible loan

We've just completed a behind the scenes visit to the Natural History Museum, looking through their vast geology collection for specimens we hope to borrow for our exhibition next year. In particular we've been trying to identify some of the early Ludlow Museum specimens that were transferred to the Natural History Museum in the 1940s. They are usually quite easy to spot as the original collectors often had their own system of marking them, using bright coloured dots. In this case blue, for the collector Henry Pardoe.

The staff at NHM were brilliant as always and with so many requests for their expertise and time its important to book early.

Having identified some lovely specimens we hope to borrow, we also had time to check out some of their other fantastic collections, including the tail of the giant Jurassic fish Leedsichthys, which staff at NHM hope to get conserved and on display again at some point in the future. The tail fins alone are pretty impressive and are going to be a giant 3D jigsaw for the conservation team.
