It's always good to see the behind the scenes work that lots of museums are now undertaking make the mainstream news. In this case the BBC article on digitising the collections at the NHM and Smithsonian is well worth a read. It gives a great summary of some of the benefits of this work. Whether that is making large delicate specimens that are too fragile to handle accessible to all, or preserving items virtually against future loss.
